What do I do in the Green?
For the Green I, you need to be able to lope your horse, stop and be able to do a spin 1 1/2 times. You do not have to have a flying lead change, a sliding stop, or a really fast spin. This class is designed to get you in the pen and give you the basics. You can ride with 2 hands on the bridle, regardless of what type of legal bridle you are using. In the Green I, you will run a simplified reining pattern. Where the pattern normally has a flying lead change, you can either do a simple lead change or you can stop and lope off the other direction (just don't wait there too long!). There are no sliding stops, so where the pattern says to stop, you just ask your horse to stop. Even a couple trot steps won't hurt you. Once you've completed your pattern, you will hesitate just a moment to show you are done. You will then face the cow pen and nod your head to call for your cow. You will then box the cow on the end for 50 seconds. The judge will blow the whistle when time is up. If you happened to draw a bad cow, you might be giving a new cow. The judge will blow the whistle 2 times if you have been given a new cow. A bad cow is a cow that won't honor your horse, is chargy or is lame or blind.
You will want to start in Green I and work your way through the points to get to Green II so you can earn your buckle!
